| Breakfast back in Miamana at the Save office. | |
| Wild poppies. We saw them everywhere. You can see a picture of the cultivated kind on Day Five. | |
| The loo. | |
| Gathering in the compound before the day's drive. | |
| Lucienne on the left talks with Leslie on the right, with a field of wild poppies in the background. | |
| Along the road. | |
| Sir Ben and Michael during the long drive from Miamana to Andkhoy. | |
| Another abandoned Soviet tank. Can't help but wonder what the driver was thinking right before this happened. | |
| It's a beautiful drive. But so few trees, in the entire country we saw. | |
| New construction; the mud on top hasn't dried yet. | |
| We stopped for lunch, yummy, Kebabs! | |
| We were a bit of a spectacle. Mike, our security consultant, passed the word that one of the people here wasn't happy about our presence. But everyone else was more than friendly. | |

This man asked me to take his picture, notice the live bird in his hand. |
| Sir Ben loaned his sunglasses, and is wondering if he's going to get them back. | |
| After lunch we walked around the town square, a teaming marketplace. Here is the local pharmacy. | |
| Spice, I forget which kind exactly. | |
| Future rugs. | |
| Shoes. | |
| More spices. | |
| We stopped for some drinks and nuts. Lucienne had stopped here before. | |
| Posted above the store, a picture that Lucienne had taken years before of the store owners. She said "I felt guilty taking their picture and giving nothing in return, so I brought them a copy." | |
| Using an abacus to total the amount. | |
| Still in the town square. Something about men on motorcycles, they want you to take their picture. | |
| Sir Ben and Donovan, that's Jim Losi behind Sir Ben. | |
| Cool. | |
| I was riding in this car, which had an alignment problem in front that was tough on tires, especially over the rough terrain. | |
| While the tire was being changed, look what happened by. | |
| Catching birds. The man in back was making noise, which scares the birds up into the net. | |
| The crack on this window was from a IED that exploded near this Save
vehicle a couple of weeks before we showed up. Apparently the driver had
pulled out to pass a slower truck, which saved their lives. Why the explosion? There was a passing wedding party; apparently someone didn't like who was marrying who. |
|
| The Afghanistan version of Bedouins. Very hard hit due to the last couple of years of drought, and the previous years of turmoil. | |
| We met up with the road from Mazar to Andkhoy, in the process of being improved. Improved roadways are a double-edged sword. They are sorely needed, but increased speeds mean more accidents. | |
| Sign in Andkhoy. | |
| That night we were treated to music from the drivers plus a local
musician (the man in black). He was incredibly expressive. Fun. |
